Latest "X-Men" Debut Astounding |
Fox’s "X-Men: The Last Stand" grossed a tremendous $120.1 million over four days, surpassing the Memorial Day weekend record of $96 million previously held by the second weekend of “Shrek 2.” In fact, the film was able to surpass that record after only three days, with a Friday-Sunday gross of $103.1 million, the fourth-highest opening weekend of all time behind “Shrek 2,” “Spider-Man,” and “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.” The opening-day gross was $45.5 million, the best Friday in Hollywood history. The film averaged an extremely high $27,947 over three days at 3,690 theaters. Foreign business was also extremely strong. Through Sunday, “X-Men” had a worldwide gross of $179.2 million.
Although this was the last film in the “X-Men” trilogy, it will almost certainly lead to several spin-offs. Marvel is already developing a “Wolverine” film starring Hugh Jackman, and a story that centers on a young Magneto. Obviously, with the success the “X-Men” films have had, and the opportunity to look closely at several of the main characters in an individual setting, we have not seen the end of this popular comic book series.
