After achieving success in the horror genre with his recent films “Cabin Fever” and “Hostel,” Eli Roth is poised to make his segue into science fiction with a new feature entitled “The Box.” The project is an adaptation of the Richard Matheson story of the same title, which describes a mysterious box and the effect it has on those who open it. Roth is developing the project with Richard Kelly, who wrote and directed “Donnie Darko” and will soon release his next feature, “Southland Tales.” According to Roth and Kelly, the film will contain many of the striking, brutal aspects of Roth’s earlier films, but will also include a more sophisticated psychological undercurrent, which Kelly’s films have been noted for.
The film tells the story of a box that will provide anyone who opens it with a large sum of money. However, in return, somebody they do not know will die. “It’s a movie about greed,” says Roth. “And what greed does to people and what people will do to other people to get what they want without having to really work for it. And how greed makes people go completely crazy.”
The project has been in development for several years, but both Kelly and Roth have not been able to commence earlier due to their busy schedules. Roth predicts that the project will go into production after he completes the sequel to “Hostel,” the aptly titled “Hostel 2.”
