Time for a three-peat!
Time for a three-peat!

With Sci Fi Studios all about inviting and nurturing new talent and feedback in entertainment, it reminds us just how the industry has been shaken up thanks to fandom. No longer is "the biz" such a remote mystery:  As fanzines begat professional writers and editors, as CGI visual effects begat a whole generation of space battles and fantasy armies created on a laptop, so now are digital cameras, editing and Internet video channels opening up the booming "hobby" of genre fan films to nearly anyone who takes the leap.

Ralph Rivas

Ralph, a sci-fi fantasy fan since age 3, resides in a penthouse near the heart of Chicago, home to a vibrant comedy and music scene that he is a part of when he is not handling high-level programming and analysis work as a senior consultant for Microsoft related technologies.

His formative years were spent mostly in the Philippines with annual trips back to the U.S. and visits to Europe, Asia, Australia and South America. He originally wanted to join the military and was actually nominated to West Point and Colorado springs when his hormones kicked leading him to a few years at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

While in college, he took his musical skills to Chicago where he discovered the home of the Blues and the birthplace of Improv Comedy and began his dual life as corporate drone by day and entertainer by night.

His day job at the Reuters office in Chicago, morphed him into a high level computer consultant for Microsoft technologies (programming, web development, systems analysis) while his evening gigs lead to major concerts, credits on a couple of albums and even a seven year stint as the co-host/musical director of an Improv comedy jam in the city.

In the early nineties, he helped pioneer Improv comedy online, which he used to enhance fledgling online role playing games and still serves as a game master for a Start Trek Tribute game on MSN. Also in the 90's he attended the writer's workshop aboard a Carnival ship as part of Cruise Trek 1996 where he was inspired to take his writing to a new level.

Currently, he is taking care of business as a part time dad to his most precious nine-year-old daughter Raquel as well as a new band and new consulting firm. In addition to travel and avid movie going, he is also spending time writing as part time journalist, humorist, screenwriter and author and is currently attending the Writers Loft Workshop in Chicago under the renown mentor and author Jerry Cleaver.
