With Sci Fi Studios all about inviting and nurturing new talent and feedback in entertainment, it reminds us just how the industry has been shaken up thanks to fandom. No longer is "the biz" such a remote mystery:  As fanzines begat professional writers and editors, as CGI visual effects begat a whole generation of space battles and fantasy armies created on a laptop, so now are digital cameras, editing and Internet video channels opening up the booming "hobby" of genre fan films to nearly anyone who takes the leap.

Jon Karas

Mr. Karas has been engaged in the personal management business since 1990 and is the founding officer of Infinity Management International, an established talent management company based in Beverly Hills, California. He has represented film and television writers and directors as well as musical groups and record producers through IMI since the company’s inception. Some of his more notable writer and director clients include Roger Towne (The Recruit, The Natural), Norman Steinberg (Blazing Saddles, The Cosby Show) Douglas Day Stewart (An Officer and a Gentleman), Clancy Sigal (Frida), Raymond and Eugenia Singer (Mulan, Iron Jawed Angels), and Robert Collector (Memoirs of An Invisible Man, Believe in Me).  

 

Mr. Karas has been involved in the packaging and/or financing of numerous feature films and television programs over the last decade.  He is a former William Morris Agency executive who was involved in the film and television literary and packaging areas. Prior to joining William Morris, he practiced corporate and entertainment law in New York City. 

 

Mr. Karas graduated cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law where he was Executive Editor of the InternationalChecking Out Law Review.  He received a Masters degree in corporate finance from NYU Law School immediately thereafter. Mr. Karas was a theatre major at Vassar College and had the honor to attend the Eugene O’Neill National Theatre Institute.  As part of his legal education he studied international law and finance at St. Edmunds’ Hall at Oxford University. 

 

As a film producer, Mr. Karas produced an adaptation of the Broadway play Checking Out in 2004.  The film stars Peter Falk, David Paymer, Laura San Giacomo, Judge Reinhold, Tony Todd and Gavin McLeod and will be released in theatres in 2006. He is currently in post-production of a film entitled Believe in Me, which he executive produced.  Believe in Me is the first girls inspirational sports movie and is based on the book Brief Garland by Newbury Award winning author Harold Keith. The film stars Bruce Dern, Samantha Mathis, Jeffrey Donovan, Heather Matarazzo and Alicia Langano.  

 

Mr. Karas is in pre-production of a film entitled Outlaw Bride, which will be filmed in Calgary, Alberta, in the Spring of 2006. He is also in pre-production of a film entitled Sympathy for the Devil, based on the novel The Vampire of Siam in partnership with John Thompson (88 Minutes, Edison, 16 Blocks).
